How to Set Up Parental Controls in ChatGPT: A Guide for Concerned Parents

How to Set Up Parental Controls in ChatGPT: A Guide for Concerned Parents
By Joan Pons 13 min min read

As a parent, I understand the concern that arises when we see our teenagers interacting with new technologies. ChatGPT has burst into their lives with undeniable force, offering a world of possibilities, but also uncertainties. Many parents ask me how they can ensure their children use this powerful tool safely.

How to set up parental controls in ChatGPT? ChatGPT does not have an integrated parental control system as we know it in video game consoles or specific browsers for children. Parental supervision in ChatGPT is primarily based on a combination of age restrictions imposed by OpenAI, the use of device- or network-level parental control tools, and, most importantly, open communication and digital education with our children. Although OpenAI implements content policies to filter harmful material, parents must supplement this with their own measures and be aware of the platform's limitations for crisis detection or transparent supervision.

At HolaNolis, we have worked tirelessly to create a safe space for teenagers in the world of AI, and today I want to share my perspective with you, as a telecommunications engineer and a parent, on how to manage ChatGPT at home.

Understanding ChatGPT and Its Risks for Teenagers

ChatGPT is an incredibly powerful tool, capable of generating text, answering questions, writing code, and much more. For a teenager, it can be a source of knowledge, a homework tutor, or even a role-playing companion. However, its generative AI nature poses several challenges for parents:

  • Inappropriate or Biased Content: Although OpenAI implements filters, ChatGPT can occasionally generate inappropriate, inaccurate, or biased content, based on the vast data it was trained on.
  • Data Privacy and Security: Teenagers are often not fully aware of the information they share online. Entering personal or sensitive data into a chatbot can have implications for their privacy.
  • Dependence and Lack of Critical Thinking: Excessive use can lead to reliance on AI to solve problems, undermining the development of critical thinking and autonomous research skills.
  • Unsupervised Interactions: Unlike a conversation with a trusted adult, interactions with ChatGPT do not have direct human supervision, meaning there is no adult who can intervene if the teenager is exploring sensitive or dangerous topics.
  • Cyberbullying or Grooming (indirect): Although ChatGPT is not human, conversations could be used by the teenager to simulate cyberbullying situations or even to generate content they would later use in dangerous interactions with other humans.

The key is not to demonize technology, but to understand it and teach our children to use it responsibly. As I explain in banning AI: protection or disadvantage?, prohibiting our children's access to AI could put them at a disadvantage in the future.

The Reality of "Parental Control" in ChatGPT

It's important to be honest from the start: ChatGPT was not designed with a robust and dedicated parental control system for parents. Unlike platforms such as YouTube Kids or certain video game consoles that offer specific control panels for parents, ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI tool. Its "controls" are based more on OpenAI's usage policies and the supervision tools that parents can implement at the device or network level.

OpenAI Age Restrictions

The first thing to know are OpenAI's rules:

  • Minors under 13: Cannot use ChatGPT.
  • Between 13 and 18 years old: Can use ChatGPT, but only with the permission and supervision of a parent or guardian.
  • Over 18 years old: Can use it freely.

Source: OpenAI Terms of Service

This means that, as parents, we are responsible for ensuring our children comply with these rules. Creating an account for a minor under 13 is a violation of the terms and exposes the child to unnecessary risks.

OpenAI Content Policies and Moderation

OpenAI has implemented a content policy system to prevent ChatGPT from generating responses that are harmful, illegal, or inappropriate. This includes content related to:

  • Hate speech
  • Sexually explicit content
  • Self-harm
  • Violence
  • Illegal activities

These filters are a first line of defense, but they are not infallible. Teenagers often find creative ways to circumvent these restrictions, and the AI can make mistakes or misinterpret intentions, generating unexpected responses.

Step-by-Step Guide to "Setting Up" Parental Controls in ChatGPT

Since there's no magic "parental control" button in ChatGPT, our strategy must be multifaceted, combining technological tools with education and trust.

Step 1: Establish Clear Rules and Open Communication

This is, by far, the most effective measure. Talk to your child about using ChatGPT. Explain the risks and expectations.

  • Define time limits: Agree on how much time they can use ChatGPT and for what purposes.
  • Explain the dangers: Talk about misinformation, inappropriate content, and the importance of not sharing personal information.
  • Foster critical thinking: Encourage them to verify information obtained from ChatGPT with other sources.
  • Create an environment of trust: Let them know they can come to you if they encounter something that makes them uncomfortable or worried. Review talking to your child about digital safety for more tips.

Step 2: Use Device- or System-Level Parental Control Tools

These tools allow you to manage access to ChatGPT like any other app or website.

a) Google Family Link (for Android devices and Chromebooks)

  • Restrict apps: You can block the ChatGPT app or access to chat.openai.com via the browser.
  • Time limits: Set usage time limits for the device or specific apps.
  • Download approval: Requires your approval for new app downloads.

How to set it up (summary):

  1. Download the Google Family Link app on your phone and your child's phone.
  2. Create a Google account for your child if they don't have one, or add their existing account to your family group.
  3. From your Family Link app, select your child's device.
  4. Go to "App controls" or "Time limits" to configure restrictions for ChatGPT or the browser.

b) Apple Screen Time (for iOS and macOS devices)

  • App limits: Set time limits for apps like Safari or the browser they use to access ChatGPT.
  • Content & Privacy Restrictions: You can block specific websites, including chat.openai.com.
  • Downtime: Schedule periods when the device cannot be used for certain apps.

How to set it up (summary):

  1. On your child's device, go to "Settings" > "Screen Time".
  2. Turn on "Screen Time" and set it up as "This is My Child's iPhone".
  3. Create a "Screen Time" passcode for yourself.
  4. From here, you can go to "App Limits" to restrict the web browser or "Content & Privacy Restrictions" > "Web Content" to block specific sites like chat.openai.com.

c) Microsoft Family Safety (for Windows devices and Xbox)

  • Web filters: Block access to inappropriate or specific websites.
  • Screen time limits: Set schedules and usage limits for devices and apps.
  • Activity reports: Receive reports on your child's online activity (though not the specific content of ChatGPT conversations).

How to set it up (summary):

  1. Sign in to your child's Microsoft account at family.microsoft.com.
  2. Create a family group and add your child's account.
  3. From the dashboard, you can configure time limits for apps and games, and use web filters to block chat.openai.com.

Step 3: Configure Network-Level Filters (Optional, for Advanced Users)

For an additional layer of protection, you can configure filters at your home router level or use a secure DNS service.

  • Router filters: Many modern routers allow blocking specific websites or content categories. Consult your router's manual to see if it has this functionality.
  • Secure DNS services: Services like OpenDNS FamilyShield (DNS: 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123) automatically filter adult content and phishing sites at the network level, affecting all connected devices. This will not block ChatGPT per se, but it will block other potentially harmful content.

Step 4: Monitor Device Activity

Although you cannot directly monitor ChatGPT conversations (unless you access your child's device and history, which can be deleted), you can supervise general device activity.

  • Check browser history: From time to time, check browser history to see if your child has visited chat.openai.com.
  • Monitoring apps: Some more advanced parental control apps can provide reports on apps used and screen time, though not the specific content of interactions within ChatGPT.

Critical Limitations of this Approach

It is crucial to understand that these measures, while useful, have serious limitations:

  • No real-time crisis detection: If your child is discussing topics like self-harm, cyberbullying, or depression with ChatGPT, the AI will not detect it as a crisis or alert you. Nolis doesn't give medical advice explains why we don't offer medical advice, but we do detect and alert.
  • Easy to circumvent: Teenagers are incredibly resourceful. They can use VPNs, browse in incognito mode, use a friend's device, or simply clear their history.
  • Lack of transparency for parents: You do not have a clear, real-time view of what your child is doing or saying with ChatGPT.
  • Not designed for teenagers: ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI. It does not have the specific safeguards or ethical design for the development and well-being of teenagers.

These limitations underscore the need to seek solutions that are designed with the safety and development of our children in mind.

HolaNolis vs. ChatGPT: A Fundamental Difference in Parental Supervision

When it comes to our children's safety in the realm of AI, the design and purpose of the tool make an enormous difference. Here's a comparative table to clearly show why HolaNolis is a superior option for AI supervision for teenagers.

Feature ChatGPT (with external controls) HolaNolis (safe AI companion for teenagers)
Primary Purpose General-purpose AI for adults and professionals. Safe and ethical AI companion, specifically designed for teenagers (10-20 years old) with parental supervision.

Philosophy Access to information and text generation. Fostering supervised autonomy and safe development for teenagers in the digital environment.

Through our experience at HolaNolis, we have observed that merely restricting access to tools like ChatGPT often leads teenagers to seek less secure alternatives or to hide their usage. The key is not to prohibit, but to guide and supervise transparently, allowing them to grow in a safe and trusting digital environment.

Beyond ChatGPT: The Importance of Active Supervision and Appropriate Tools

I understand that, as parents, our priority is the safety and well-being of our children. Device-level parental control tools are a good starting point, but they don't address the core problem with generative AIs: the lack of transparent supervision and the absence of specific safety mechanisms for minors.

The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has already warned about the risks of AI for minors, highlighting the need for tools designed with "privacy by design" and "security by design" principles when it comes to children and teenagers. Source: AEPD - Guide on Privacy and Security in AI (2023).

In this context, a solution like HolaNolis not only complements your parental control efforts but also offers a layer of protection and peace of mind that general-purpose AIs cannot match. It is an AI companion that your child can use freely, knowing that you have the necessary visibility to ensure their safety, and that the system is designed to protect them.

A Balanced Approach: Trust, Education, and Technology

My advice, as a parent and a professional, is to adopt a balanced approach:

  1. Education and Communication: Talk to your children. Teach them to be critical and responsible users of technology.
  2. Device-Level Controls: Use existing parental control tools on their devices to manage screen time and general access.
  3. Specifically Designed Tools: Consider solutions like HolaNolis, which are built from the ground up with the safety of teenagers and the peace of mind of parents in mind.

It is vital to remember that technology evolves rapidly. Staying informed and adapting to new tools is part of being a parent in the digital age. For more information on how to protect your teenager online, consult our guide to protecting your teenager online or our safe AI guide for teenagers.

Conclusion: Your Children's Safety in the Age of AI is in Your Hands
