Quick Start Guide: First Steps with HolaNolis

Quick Start Guide: First Steps with HolaNolis
By Joan Pons 10 min min read

Setting up HolaNolis takes less than 10 minutes: create your guardian account, choose a plan, add your child, select a supervision level, and send the invitation. The minor must accept the chosen level, and crisis alerts are active from the very first moment — even on the free plan.

Getting started with HolaNolis is quick and straightforward. In less than 10 minutes you can have everything configured so your child can start chatting with Nolis in a safe, supervised environment. This guide walks you through the entire process step by step. With 64% of teenagers already using AI chatbots (Pew Research, 2025) and 14 deaths linked to unsupervised chatbots (Associated Press, 2025), setting up a safe alternative can't wait.

Step 1: Create your guardian account (2 minutes)

The first step is creating your account as a guardian (parent, mother, or legal guardian). You have two options:

  • Email and password: enter your email address, choose a strong password, and confirm your address using the link we'll send you.
  • Quick sign-in with Google or Microsoft: if you have a Google account or a work account with Microsoft (Azure AD), you can register with a single click. It's the fastest option.

What you need to know

  • Your guardian account is free. No credit card required to get started.
  • You can add multiple minors to one guardian account.
  • Email verification is mandatory. If you don't receive the email, check your spam folder.
  • Your account data is encrypted and protected under GDPR. We never share personal information with third parties.

Step 2: Choose your plan

HolaNolis offers two options:

Free Plan

  • Limited conversations per week
  • Crisis alerts always active
  • One minor per account
  • Basic supervision

Premium Plan (~€9/month)

  • Unlimited conversations
  • Crisis alerts always active
  • Up to 5 minors per account
  • All three supervision levels (Light, Medium, Full)
  • Detailed weekly summaries
  • Advanced interest and topic configuration

Our recommendation: start with the free plan to try it out. You can upgrade to Premium at any time from your guardian panel. Payment is handled through Stripe, the market's most trusted payment platform, and you can cancel whenever you want with no commitments or lock-in periods.

Step 3: Add your child

From your guardian panel, click "Add minor" and fill in the basic information:

  • Name (or nickname): how you want to identify your child in the panel. Nolis will call them by the name the minor chooses when setting up their own account.
  • Date of birth: important for supervision level recommendations and for automatic reviews at ages 14, 16, and 18.
  • Minor's email: required so they can receive the invitation and create their own account. If your child doesn't have an email, you can create a dedicated one for this purpose.

About minors and email addresses

At HolaNolis, email is required for all users, with no minimum age restriction. This allows us to:

  • Send the invitation securely
  • Verify the minor's identity
  • Send important notifications (such as the weekly summary if the minor wants one)

The minor's email is only used for HolaNolis operations. We don't send advertising or share the address with anyone. To understand how we comply with GDPR and minors' rights, see our article on AI and minors: what European law says.

Step 4: Choose the supervision level

This is probably the most important step. HolaNolis offers three supervision levels, and the choice depends on your child's age, maturity, and your family's situation.

Light — Trust with a safety net

  • You see: crisis alerts + weekly usage hours
  • Ideal for: ages 16 to 20, families with high trust and open communication

Medium — The balance

  • You see: everything in Light + topic summaries + emotional overview + interest configuration
  • Ideal for: ages 13 to 15, most families

Full — Maximum transparent supervision

  • You see: everything in Medium + complete conversation history
  • Ideal for: ages 10 to 12, first AI experience, situations of specific concern

Three key points

  1. Crisis alerts are always active, at all three levels. If Nolis detects a serious risk situation, we notify you immediately.
  2. Your child always sees their level. There's no hidden monitoring. Transparency is the foundation of trust.
  3. You can change levels at any time. This isn't an irreversible decision.

If you're unsure which to choose, see our complete guide to supervision levels.

Step 5: Send the invitation

Once the supervision level is configured, HolaNolis generates an invitation that you can send to your child in two ways:

  • QR code: your child scans it with their phone and goes directly to registration. Ideal if you're together.
  • Email link: a link is sent to the minor's email address. Ideal if you're not in the same place.

What happens when your child accepts the invitation

  1. Your child creates their account (name, password or SSO with Google/Microsoft).
  2. They clearly see the supervision level you've configured and what it means.
  3. They accept the terms. This step matters: the minor gives their informed consent to the supervision level.
  4. They choose what they want Nolis to call them.
  5. They can start chatting.

If your child rejects the invitation, you'll receive a notification. This can happen if they disagree with the supervision level — and it's a perfect opportunity to have a conversation about trust and expectations before trying again. For advice on how to start that conversation, read our guide on how to talk to your child about digital safety.

Step 6: Your child starts chatting with Nolis

Nolis is HolaNolis's AI companion. It's not a tutor, not a therapist, not a search engine. It's a safe conversational companion designed specifically for teenagers.

What Nolis is like

  • Curious: asks questions, genuinely interested in what your child shares.
  • Warm: uses a friendly, empathetic tone without being condescending.
  • Playful: has a sense of humor adapted to the user's age.
  • Honest: if it doesn't know something, it says so. If your child asks it to do something it shouldn't, it explains why respectfully.
  • Intellectually stimulating: doesn't give homework answers directly, but uses the Socratic method to help them think.
  • Respectful: respects boundaries, doesn't push, doesn't emotionally manipulate.

What Nolis does NOT do

  • Does not give medical or psychological advice
  • Does not generate diet plans or content about body image
  • Does not give direct answers to homework (uses the Socratic method)
  • Does not use retention techniques (no streaks, no FOMO, no "we miss you" notifications)
  • Does not encourage emotional dependency

To understand in detail why these limitations are a strength, not a shortcoming, read why Nolis doesn't give medical or psychological advice.

What to expect in the first week

The first few days

It's normal for your child to do some exploring: ask test questions, try to "break" Nolis (everyone does), and gradually discover that it's a different kind of conversation partner than other chatbots they may have used. Nolis is prepared for all of this and handles it naturally and with humor.

Your first weekly report

At the end of the first week, you'll receive a weekly report by email (also available in your guardian panel) with information corresponding to your supervision level:

  • Light: total usage hours
  • Medium: usage hours + main topic summary + general emotional trend
  • Full: all of the above + complete conversation history

How crisis alerts work

If at any point Nolis detects a serious risk signal (self-harm, suicidal ideation, abuse, imminent danger), an automatic protocol is activated:

  1. Nolis responds to the minor with empathy and offers professional help resources (crisis lines, support numbers).
  2. You receive an alert in real time via email and push notification (if enabled).
  3. The alert includes context: what type of risk was detected and what level of urgency it carries.

This system works at all three supervision levels and 24 hours a day, including weekends and public holidays.

Tips for a smooth start

1. Have the conversation first

Before sending the invitation, talk to your child about HolaNolis. Explain what it is, why you're using it, and which supervision level you've chosen — and why. If possible, choose the level together. Starting with an imposition is starting off on the wrong foot.

2. Choose the level together

Involving your child in choosing the supervision level sends a powerful message: "I trust you enough to include you in this decision." It's an act of respect that tends to have an immediate positive impact.

3. Review together after two weeks

Mark a date on the calendar. After two weeks, sit down together to review how it's gone: Does your child like Nolis? Are they comfortable with the supervision level? Is there anything you'd change? This early review establishes the habit of talking about the tool together — which is very valuable in the long run.

4. Don't read the history as a diary if the level is Full

If you've chosen Full, technically you can read all the conversations. But the goal isn't to read every message as if it were a secret diary. The goal is to have visibility to detect problems and be present. Use the history with care and respect, as you would any aspect of your child's private life.

5. Normalize talking about AI

Mention from time to time what Nolis has discussed with your child, ask what topics they've covered, share your own AI experiences. The more natural it is to talk about technology at home, the easier it will be for your child to come to you if something worries them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HolaNolis free? What does the free plan include? +
Yes, there's a permanent free plan that includes limited conversations per week, crisis alerts always active, and one minor per account. No credit card required to get started. The Premium plan (~€9/month) adds unlimited conversations, up to 5 minors, and the full three supervision levels.
How many children can I add to my guardian account? +
With the free plan, one minor per account. With the Premium plan, up to 5 minors, each with their own profile and independent supervision level. You can manage all of them from a single guardian panel and receive crisis alerts from all of them in real time.
What happens if my child doesn't accept the invitation? +
You'll receive a rejection notification. You can't force use of the service: the minor's informed consent is a design requirement. Use that moment as an opportunity for dialogue about what supervision level seems reasonable to them. Most rejections are resolved with an honest conversation about the chosen level.
Can I change my plan after signing up? +
Yes, you can upgrade or cancel your plan at any time from the guardian panel, with no additional costs or lock-in periods. The change is immediate. If you cancel, the account reverts to the free plan, keeping one minor and crisis alerts active.
What happens when my child turns 18? +
HolaNolis sends a notification to both guardian and minor inviting them to review the supervision level. At 18, many young people voluntarily choose to keep a Light level for the safety net that crisis alerts provide. The final decision belongs to the young person. If they decide to leave the supervision framework, the guardian receives a notification.
